Sourced from Soviet stockpiles from the 1960s, coil wires 0,063 mm (42 AWG) and a little thinner 0,060 mm, which positioned between 42 and 43 AWG, they provide a character that modern equivalents don't fully replicate. The insulation is different. The copper has a different grain structure from how it was drawn and processed decades ago. The result is a tone that's impossible to fully measure but immediately recognizable once you've heard it.
The classic twang is there, the bottle-like bloom, the kind of tonal texture that players describe and struggle to define. It's in the way notes decay, the way a chord hangs in the air slightly longer than you expect, with more harmonic detail hanging on in the fade. It's in the way single notes respond, the way a bend or vibrato seems to carry more information, more texture, more of the instrument's actual voice.

I spent months trying to find a replacement that matched what I had. I had to send 3 times my broken pickup to different winders, as money was not an issue, a problem was to resurrect that voice to life. Got back things that measured correctly on paper and sounded wrong in my hands. That's when I understood that the problem wasn't just about replacing a pickup, it was about understanding what made the original work in the first place. The magnetic strength, the wire characteristics, the scatter pattern of the wind, all of it contributed to something that can't be reverse-engineered from measurements alone.
